It's All About Love

Jan 12, 2020

Neal went on a bible tour, preaching the gospel.

This morning we started by looked at Romans 1 vs 25 as background in which Paul writes “ They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshipped and served the things God created instead of the creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen!”

It’s so easy for us to worship things rather than the creator of all things and we need to be aware of this as a danger in our Christian lives.

We looked back at the Garden of Eden and the story of the fall – Genesis 1 vs 26-31 and Genesis 3 vs 1-13

The first sin is disobedience to God’s instruction – its no wonder that Paul calls us sons of disobedience in Ephesians! So we looked at how the enemy operates in the garden and recognised that he operates in the same way with us in our lives.

Firstly, vs 1 e approaches as a friend with what appears an innocuous comment – but the comment raises a question in Eve’s mind and brings DOUBT!

Secondly, vs 4 having gained her attention he brings a lie – Remember that the bible tells us that he is a liar from the beginning – the father of lies (john 8 vs 44)

Thirdly, vs5 – He brings discontent – You will gain an advantage if you do this – Questions God’s heart – almost like God is holding you back (another lie)

Note- Still no sin at this point – only temptation – Unwise discussion yes – But then she looked and the tree and the fruit looked good and she desired what she did not have (wisdom) –

Looking always brings trouble and leads to sin – Its dangerous!

Sin will always look good and taste good – It only works if it is tempting? If you like chocolate you will not be tempted with flowers and the same the other way round! Counterfeit goods only work if they look like the original – but when you come to cash them in they are worthless!

Paul tells us in James 4 vs 7 to “resist” the devil – this is active not passive and in 2 Timothy 2 vs 22 – He says “run” from sin – once again active not passive – this is important when the devil attacks us with temptation.

So perfection is broken and the relationships created in the Garden of Eden are lost because of sin. – Sin separates us from God –

Timothy Keller in his book “The reason for God” says this:

“The essence of sin is not primarily a breaking of laws but a wrecked relationship with God, one another, and the whole created order. All sins are attempts to fill voids, because we cannot stand the God shaped hole inside of us, we try stuffing it full of all sorts of THINGS, but only God himself will fill it”

In the story of the chickens and the eagle – the eagles nest is high on the hill and one day one egg rolls down the hill into the chicken run and is sat on and hatched by a chicken. The eagle is hatched believing he is a chicken and spends all his days pecking the ground for food and looks into the sky thinking I wish I could fly like those birds in the sky – so effortless and beautiful – missing what he was created for! Is this like us? We are created for relationship with God and that’s why Jesus came to reconcile us to God and bridge the gap that sin had created.

In his book “imagine Heaven” John Burke writes

“Everything God claims to have done through the prophets and through Jesus is for the sake of love-to restore people to a love relationship with God, so he can teach us to love one another as he loves us. The greatest love that we feel for children, a spouse, friends or family on earth amounts to a teaspoon of love compared to the oceans we will experience together for eternity. The old testament prophets foretold it, Jesus demonstrated it, and those who have had a peak behind the veil consistently say the same thing – God is love, and Heaven will be the greatest reunion ever.”

The greatest commandment is that we love God with all our heart, all our soul and all your mind – eg with everything we have – this is what he seeks and he hates lukewarm love! So do we! In writing to the seven churches in revelation John commends many of them for their hard work and steadfastness but two he picks out and speaks to them strongly as they have left their first love and have become luke warm – So bad that he writes that he will spit them out of his mouth (Revelation 3 vs 16) He warns them to turn from their indifference and remember where they have come from.

What about us? Have we left our first love? Are we luke warm and indifferent? We need to remember, repent and Renew our love just as the early Church had to.

In his book “imagine Heaven” John Burke writes

“Love matters to God because he is love at the core of his being. God is love. Like an eagle is made to soar the heights, we were made for God’s love. Love is our native atmosphere. Yet in a fallen world we have been separated from Love. What we experience as “normal life” is anything but! We are eagles chained to the earth, longing to soar”

One day God will created a new heaven and New Earth that will put right all that went wrong on the garden of Eden – we can read about this in Revelation chapter 21 – 22 vs 5

God finished the work of creation and it was good

Jesus finished the work and plan of redemption for mankind and it was good

The trinity will finish the plan in the New Heaven and the New earth and it will be amazing!!

We were built to worship creator God 0 not what he has created – Keep your eyes on him because on day you will not be able to take your eyes off him!
